SSLVPN Remote Access - User Guide

 1. Introduction

Computer Service Centre offers a SSLVPN remote access service for staff and students for accessing:

  • . Library e-Resources: Meta-Search System, e-Journals, e-Databases and e-News Clipping
  • . Selected (Intranet only) Information Systems
  • . MPI Intranet web pages
  • . Personal network storage (U:drive).

SSLVPN provides secure SSL encryption between the VPN concentrator and the end user’s web browser. This is a simple but useful method for securing a link to the campus network as many campus web services require the user to be within Institute’s IP addresses range to access them (e.g. Library e-Journals). Because the SSLVPN essentially does the browsing for the user and returns the data to his/her browser, the results appear to originate from within campus.

2. Requirements

The SSLVPN service is a clientless, web-based version of VPN, supported by most of the latest web browsers.

You will need to have a valid NetID & NetPassword.

3. Important Reminders

Ensure your Windows and Web Browser are up to date with the latest security patches.

Do not use the SSLVPN service to connect to banking, financial, or other Web pages where you have to enter personal information (name, address, social security number, banking login and password, etc). The SSLVPN service intercepts any certificates from the Web site, which prevents your browser from checking the certificates for validity.

The aim of providing the SSLVPN service is to facilitate academic research, teaching & learning and should not be used for other purposes.   The Computer Service Centre will continuously monitor the usage of the SSLVPN service, and should inappropriate use of the SSLVPN is detected, the Centre reserves the right to stop the service to individual not using the network resource properly (e.g. transferring or downloading large files not related to course teaching, researching, spreading viruses, hacking other computers, etc.) and may exercise more stringent control on SSLVPN usage.

 4. Access to SSLVPN Service

1.  Direct your web browser to https://SSLVPN.ipm.edu.mo

Type https://sslvpn.ipm.edu.mo in the browser window. You will be directed to a Login page. This page is secure, and you will be asked to accept a Security Certificate before the page opens.

2.  Login to SSLVPN

You must login before you can use the service. Type your NetID and NetPassword and click the Sign in button.

You will see a page similar to the one below after the login.

3. Access to Web Page via SSLVPN

You can either click on the websites listed in the main page or type any URL in the field close to the Browse button.

For example, if you click on the “Library e-Resources” link, you will be directed to the Library's e-resources page.

You can access any external Library e-Resource, as if you were in campus.

4. SSLVPN Toolbar

The SSLVPN has a toolbar that floats over the pages you are visiting.

This toolbar is always visible in the browser window when using the SSLVPN. By default, it is set to the right-hand side. By clicking on the arrows  Move  you can move it to the left.
