The Polytechnic Institute of Leiria is a public higher education institution in Portugal. Since 2006, MPI and the Beijing Language and Culture University have established inter-university cooperation with the Institute in terms of exchanging students and teachers in order to cultivate Chinese Portuguese bilingual translation talents. The Centre is built in the style of a typical Chinese pavilion. It provides not only an academic space for students and teachers to study Chinese Language and Culture, but also a platform for overseas Chinese and local Portuguese people to communicate with each other.
At present, there are 38 MPI undergraduates from two different grades studying Portuguese Language in Leiria. Meanwhile, there are 6 Portuguese students undertaking their third-year studies at Beijing Language and Culture University and 14 others following their second-year studies at MPI. Each having their own distinctive advantages, the effective cooperation of the three institutions sets a good example with regard to the joint organization of educational programmes for institutions in Macao, Portugal and mainland China.
